The newest members of the Penn community have arrived on campus, along with their suitcases, laptops, music collections, bookshelves, bedding and all the other things necessary to make a dorm room feel like home.

In what has become a move-in day tradition, Penn President Amy Gutmann paid a visit to Hill College House and other dorms to welcome some of the nearly 2,500 freshmen and their families.

This year’s freshman class hails from every state in the union, with the largest number of coming from Pennsylvania (381), New York (323), New Jersey (261) and California (217). As a group, they are already accomplished scholars, with a large majority having graduated from high school in the top 10 percent of their class.

The Class of 2014 also includes more than 250 international students who have come from as far away as Africa, Australia and China to experience Penn.

The new students will spend a few days getting to know the University and the city at New Student Orientation events before classes begin on Sept. 8. They will tour the city, get introduced to some of the area’s cultural offerings, taste Philadelphia cheese steaks and pretzels and learn more about what they can expect in college life.
