Bartending classes on campus

WHAT: A one-day, total-immersion course in bartending on Oct. 16 that will make you ready to shake, stir, mix and pour like a champ. The class is offered by Penn Student Agencies with instruction from the Main Line Center for Bartending. For class fees and registration visit www.pennstudent agencies.com.

MAKE IT A DOUBLE: Open to students, faculty, staff and members of the community, the general bartending class offers students hands-on training in mixing drinks, handling money and good sales techniques. Students can also sign up for an additional class called Training for Intervention Procedures—or TIPS—that concentrates on the responsible service, sale and consumption of alcohol. A TIPS certification is a credential that many bars require for employment. Students can take the certification test on the same day as the TIPS class.

SHAKEN AND STIRRED: Participants will be provided with supplies at the bartending classes, including a manual with more than 100 pages of recipes and all the equipment needed to re-enact scenes from the movie “Cocktail.”

BELLY UP TO THE BAR: Audrey Edmondson, general manager for Penn Student Agencies, suggests registering for the classes early because the 15 to 20 slots fill up fast. She adds that many take the basic class simply to learn how to mix cocktails for their friends, but others have used the TIPS certification and training to find part-time jobs.

A TOAST TO DEAR OLD PENN: The bartending classes are only one of several conveniences offered by Penn Student Agencies, a collection of student-run businesses that have thrived on campus since 1933. Over the years PSA has run a shoe store, a card shop, a trunk moving squad and a coat-checking service at the Palestra.

DRINKS TO DRY CLEANING: Today, the PSA offers pick-up and drop-off laundry and dry cleaning services—primarily to students living in dorms, but the dry cleaning delivery is also open to faculty and staff working on campus. PSA also runs the Williams Café, located on the main level of Williams Hall, offering coffee, bagels, pastries and catering. Other PSA services include posting flyers around campus for events and making “care packages” that can be ordered through the PSA website during the school year.

CHECK, PLEASE: The basic bartending class costs $170, which includes the registration fee, the instruction, the bartending manual and rental of pourers, a shaker, a stirrer, a strainer and other tools. The TIPS certification class costs $125 and includes the instruction, a manual and the certification test fee. PSA offers both classes as an all-inclusive package for $260. Register for the October classes at www.penstudentagencies.com. A second set of classes will be offered on Nov. 13. For more information call PSA at 215-898-6815.
