Penn Bookstore hosts annual holiday sale Dec. 9-10

Don’t miss the annual holiday sale at the Penn Bookstore on Dec. 9 and 10, when selected merchandise will be discounted by 20 percent, and customers can shop to the musical sounds of the season, courtesy of student performing arts groups.

“Both days, we’ll have a full schedule of live musical performances,” says Ilene Wilder, director of marketing and business development for Penn’s Business Service Division, which oversees the Bookstore.

On Thursday, Dec. 9, the Penn Glee Club, the University's oldest performing arts group, will begin singing at 1 p.m., and the Penny Loafers, a modern rock/pop/indie a cappella group, will perform at 4 p.m.

On Friday, Dec. 10, shoppers will be serenaded all afternoon with a wide range of musical offerings. The performances will begin with a flute ensemble at 1 p.m., the Glee Club will make a second appearance at 2 p.m., and Off The Beat, a modern rock a cappella group, will sing at 3 p.m. The entertainment will come to a rousing end with the Penn Band playing at 5:30 p.m.

While the music plays, shoppers can pose for a free seasonal photograph at the Bookstore’s expanded holiday village display on the second floor, open from 1 to 6 p.m. The photos, Wilder says, are always popular. “A lot of people use them as holiday cards. In the past, we’ve had over 300 pictures taken each year.”

On the shelves and racks, customers will find discounted Penn-branded apparel, specialty items, games and toys, stocking stuffers, calendars and puzzles and, of course, books for all ages. Shoppers should be aware, however, that textbooks and the Nook electronic reader are among the few items not eligible for the holiday discount. Free gift wrapping is available.

For gifts that make a socially responsible statement, the Bookstore offers the School House and Alta Gracia lines of apparel, manufactured by workers who are paid fair-labor wages.
