A short animation illustrating how cells defend against foreign DNA has been released by a new partnership of the Annenberg Public Policy Center and the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The video shows how the cells in our bodies are equipped with built-in safety mechanisms that repel DNA fragments that could be introduced by bacteria, food, or vaccines.

A bioengineered bean gum from the lab of Penn Dental’s Henry Daniell is found to reduce the levels of three microbes associated with head and neck squamous cell cancer to almost zero, without affecting the beneficial bacteria normally found in the mouth.
