Conversation with Novelist Howard Langer

Howard Langer, a Penn Carey Law professor and alum, will discuss his careers as both a fiction writer and leading antitrust lawyer. Participants will learn about his most notable case: a class action that recovered $200 million from a bank that had abetted fraudulent telemarketers who preyed on the poor and elderly. Langer began writing "The Last Dekreptizer," his first novel and a National Jewish Book Award winner, in 2021 after attending a Zoom workshop sponsored by the Free Library of Philadelphia.

The Politics of Privies

Donald Dostie, a Ph.D. candidate in history at Temple University, will share insights from his dissertation, “Necessary Steps: Urban Privies, Social Anxieties, and the Remaking of Philadelphia, 1793-1854.” During this session, hosted by the McNeil Center for Early American Studies, attendees will look at urban Philadelphians’ relationship with the outdoor privy to examine evolving understandings of propriety, privacy, property, community, health, and state power.

Penn Medicine: Advances in Throat Cancer Treatment

Incidence of HPV+ throat cancers is rapidly increasing and may soon become the most common type of head and neck cancer. During this half-hour webinar geared toward Penn alumni, Devraj Basu, associate professor of otorhinolaryngology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss his efforts to maximize cure rates and reduce the negative impacts of treatment on patients’ quality of life.
