Leishmaniasis is far from a household word in the United States, but in the tropics, this disease affects roughly 12 million people, with about 2 million new cases every year. The cutaneous form causes unsightly skin ulcers that take months or even years to heal, and can cause major tissue damage.

Monday’s Commencement marked the last event at Franklin Field for a while.

When Amtrak 188 derailed in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia on May 12, eight people died and more than 200 were injured. When the group’s founder James An, was 10, his family moved from Gwangmyeong-Si, South Korea, to Vancouver, British Columbia, and as he was adapting to life in Canada he would emulate rap performers such as Eminem.

Richard “Dick” Henriques has been appointed a senior fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for High Impact Philanthropy, with a joint appointment at the Wharton Social Impact Initiative.

Penn’s 259th University Commencement drew visitors from all corners of the world Monday, May 18, filling Franklin Field with languages representative of Penn’s widely diverse community.
