Penn is committed to the wellbeing of the entire University community, and is holding two special events to promote a culture of safety on campus.

On Friday, Sept. 28, the Division of Public Safety (DPS) and the Philadelphia Fire Department are co-hosting Penn’s annual Campus Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness Awareness Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As part of a national campaign, representatives from DPS’s Fire and Emergency Services and the Philadelphia Fire Department will be stationed at various intersections across campus to distribute literature and answer questions.

Speakers at a press conference, which will take place at noon outside the Penn Bookstore, will include Maureen S. Rush, vice president for public safety at Penn, and Lloyd Ayers, fire commissioner of the City of Philadelphia.

“Safety and security is multifaceted,” Rush says. “We analyze all risks and develop numerous presentations to provide educational solutions for our community.”

On Wednesday, Oct. 10, DPS and Penn’s Office of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety will hold their 3rd Annual Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Biomedical Research Building lobby, 421 Curie Blvd.

Attendees can learn what steps they can take to promote safety awareness in the workplace. Representatives from health and safety organizations across campus will be on hand to answer questions about ergonomics, personal safety, recycling, proper personal protective equipment usage, training compliance, radiation safety, and other important safety issues.

Vendors such as Fisher Scientific, Grainger, Micro-Clean, Showa Best Gloves, Inc., Curtis Bay Energy, and Air Gas will also provide information, samples, and give-a-ways. Prizes include a Barnes and Noble Nook.

“Instilling a culture of safety in the workplace has made headlines in recent years. Each person must be aware of the hazards and how to work with them safely,” says Marie-Luise Faber, a biosafety officer with Environmental Health & Radiation Safety and the Safety Fair organizer. “This is a great opportunity for the research community to get their safety-related questions answered in person by experts in the field—everything from best work practices to personal safety.”
