The Community Teamworks program brings together alumni, faculty, students, and staff at the School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2) for days of service and volunteer projects around the city.

On Saturday, April 6, Community Teamworks and the Sayre Health Center are co-sponsoring the 2nd Annual Community Health Fair, held in the Sayre Health Center parking lot, 59th and Locust streets.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., attendees can partake in free educational sessions, dental exams, nutritional counseling, and health screenings, and enjoy games, wellness activities, prizes, and live entertainment. More than 300 West Philadelphia residents are expected to attend.

Providenza Loera Rocco, an SP2 alumna and coordinator of Community Teamworks, says that she is looking for volunteers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., to help set up the event, clean up afterwards, lead wellness activities such as yoga, soccer, and softball, provide health screenings, and do marketing and outreach.

“We want to involve health care and legal professionals, nutritionists, and safety experts, but it all depends on how people feel that they can best make a difference in the lives of others,” Loera Rocco explains. “We also need volunteers to point attendees to what they’re interested in and run programs for children.”

Community Teamworks is also concerned about the health and wellbeing of four-legged friends.

Through Monday, April 1, SP2 is collecting supplies for the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), which is dedicated to saving homeless, abandoned, and unwanted animals. As the city’s largest no-kill shelter, PAWS operates a low-cost veterinary clinic serving pet owners and rescue organizations. Through adoptions and a foster care network, PAWS finds loving homes for thousands of animals each year.

Loera Rocco says common household items, such as bleach, laundry detergent, paper towels, trash bags, and fleece blankets, are needed most.

Donations are being accepted on the second floor of the Caster Building, 3701 Locust Walk.
