Student Athletes

Student-athletes come to Penn not just to be members of the University’s NCAA Division I athletic programs, but also to receive one of the finest undergraduate educations in the world.

Penn Athletics recognizes and honors the student-athletes who raise the bar for their classmates. In this edition of By The Numbers, we take a closer look at some of the ways these students set the standard both in the classroom and on the field, court, or rink.

      Number of endowed awards given each year by Penn Athletics to the senior student-athletes with the best cumulative GPA: the Norman J. Goldring Award—which is given to both the top male and female letter winners—and the George H. Frazier Award.

      Number of student-athletes who have earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships over the past two years: Shaul Gordon of men’s fencing (winter 2015-16), Jenna Hebert of women’s rowing (spring 2016), and Brooks Martino of wrestling (pictured, spring 2017).

      Number of student-athletes who were voted Academic All-Area Performer of the Year in their sport last year by the Philadelphia-area sports information directors (PhillySIDA).

      Number of Penn teams (out of 28 eligible) to receive Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA’s Academic Progress Report. That tied Penn for fourth in the nation.
