As it has done for 25 years, Penn Volunteers in Public Service has provided as much as $1,000 in non-tuition scholarships to college-bound students from West Philadelphia high schools who were chosen based on community service and academic excellence.

This year’s recipients are:

• Marquise Cannon, Overbrook High School
• Tymir Green-Ellis, Parkway West High School
• Corinthe “Corey” Hamilton, Sayre High School
• Lanisha Cox, West Philadelphia High School
• Ezenwa Ilabor, West Philadelphia High School

The students were recognized June 14. 

With the non-tuition scholarships, the students will be able to purchase items, such as books along with other items that college freshman need as they try to create a home away from home. In addition, students received backpacks, flash drives, computers, printers, mini-refrigerators, microwaves, alarm clocks and other items for their college residences.  

Danny Sutton, senior pastor of The Kingdom Life Church, served as the keynote speaker.  

Remarks were given by Avery Hunter-Brooks, a rising senior and criminal justice major at La Salle University, and musical selections were played by Phillip Dorsey Allen of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School.  

Program supporters include the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, Business Services Division, Penn Move Out Volunteers Engaging in Service, the Hilton Inn at Penn, Office Depot, Yvonne Paterson and Milton Rossman, Penn Computer Connection, Penn Parking Services, Penn Purchasing Services, Penn Museum, PennVIPS Pick Up Change Drive, Jennifer Sweda and the Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel.
