At Franklin Field on Saturday, Maura Kimmel, a sophomore thrower on the Penn women’s track and field team, broke two University records in the discus and shot put as the men’s and women’s track and field programs opened their outdoor season.

Kimmel, from West Sunbury, Pa., outside of Pittsburgh, broke her own school record in the discus with a throw of 50.80. In the shot put, her record-breaking 15.25m toss is nearly a full meter ahead of the second-place mark, which had stood since 2013.

The Quakers hosted several teams from around the region on Saturday for the Penn Challenge, including Army West Point, Columbia, Connecticut, La Salle, Rider, Cornell, St. John’s, and Villanova. Kimmel led a group of eight Top 10 performances by the women’s track and field team.

During the indoor track and field season, Kimmel was named Second-Team All-Ivy in the shot put. Last season, she had nine Top 5 placements and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She set the school record in the discus throw with a toss of 49.70m at Ivy Heps.

Penn will be back in action at the Florida and Raleigh Relays from March 30-31.
