Every year, more than 1 million Americans have surgery to replace a joint, such as a hip or knee. One of the biggest risks of these procedures is infection.

Eight faculty members at the University of Pennsylvania have been named Penn Fellows. The announcement was made today by Penn Provost Vincent Price and Anita Allen, vice provost for faculty.

The University of Pennsylvania will remember Martin Luther King Jr. with its 20th Annual Commemorative Symposium on Social Change, a series of nearly 20 community events, Jan. 19-30.

The University of Pennsylvania will host three celebrated writers as Kelly Writers House Fellows during the 2015 spring semester: poet Anne Waldman, editor and author Dorothy Allison and playwright and novelist Jessica Hagedorn.

“In today’s world, the stereotype of the nerdy scientist, by himself, looking at a microscope, is no longer accurate and no longer useful,” says Gabriel Innes, a third-year student in the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.

University of Pennsylvania Provost Vincent Price, Vice Provost for Education Andrew Binns, the Council of Undergraduate Deans and the Office of New Student Orientation and Academic Initiatives today announced that the 2015-16 academic theme will be the Year of Discovery and that The Big Sea by Langston Hughes will be the Penn Reading Project.

For the all-female musical sketch comedy group, Bloomers, making people laugh is another benefit of their educational experience at the University of Pennsylvania.

Jasheel Brown came to the University of Pennsylvania with no experience in Tae Kwon Do, but, by the time he graduates, he will have earned a black belt.

University of Pennsylvania senior Steve Scarfone and junior Jeffrey Ng are part of a local community-engagement project that mixes volunteering and increasing access to learning through Penn Science Across Ages.
