Considering the relevance that the current healthcare system holds as a marker of the nation’s wellbeing, doctors at the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) are rethinking how to steer and develop leadership among its staff to better serve a wider and more diverse criteria for health.
In a a Perspective piece published in the New England Journal of Medicine, PSOM Dean J. Larry Jameson called for leadership training to expand and evolve to better address the broader environment of healthcare, from finance and emerging technologies to better communication and collaboration skills.
To streamline a new direction for leadership training, Jameson and co-author Caryn Lerman outlined three strategies to identify and onboard new leaders. Beginning in 2019, PSOM and the Wharton School will launch an executive education program for future healthcare leaders. This new program joins the Wharton MD/Master of Business Administration (MD/MBA) program as well as Penn Medicine’s Healthcare Leadership for Quality Residency Track already underway.
