On Monday, May 15, the University of Pennsylvania honors the Class of 2023 at the 267th Commencement. Approximately 6,000 students, undergrad and graduate, are expected to walk in the University-wide Commencement ceremony.
Penn’s live webcast begins at 8:30 a.m. when celebratory Twitter and Instagram posts are shared followed by video coverage of the procession. The official ceremony kicks off at 10:15 a.m. as students, faculty, staff, family members, and friends celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2023. How many are graduating? How many are Civic Scholars? And how many graduate students were honored with Graduate Leadership Awards? Here are those numbers and more.
The number of May 2023 graduates. There are approximately 9,240 undergrad and graduate students eligible to walk in the graduation celebration on May 15. This number includes the May 2023 graduates as well as 1,555 summer 2022 graduates and 1,292 December 2022 graduates.
As of May 8, the number of diplomas being awarded to May 2023 graduates. This includes 2,454 traditional undergraduate degrees, and 3,425 master’s and 226 Ph.D. degrees. The number of degrees exceeds the number of graduates due to students who are awarded dual degrees or submatriculated in multiple programs. The total number of diplomas for summer 2022, December 2022, and May 2023 combined is 9,808.
