Taking on LIU for the first time on Sunday, the field hockey team shut out the Sharks 2-0 at Ellen Vagelos Field.
Making her first career start, first-year forward Livia Loozen scored a goal in the fourth minute of the first quarter, assisted by second-year midfielder Courtney Kenah, to put Penn up 1-0.
Loozen, from Utrecht, the Netherlands, also played a role in the Quakers’ second goal; she assisted on fourth-year forward Meghan Ward’s goal from the circle in the 38th minute of the third quarter.
The Red & Blue outshot the Sharks 17-4 and only allowed one shot in the second half.
Second-year goalkeeper Frederique Wollaert, from Hilversum, the Netherlands, had two saves. Loozen finished with two shots, two shots on goal, one goal, and one assist. Ward had two shots, two shots on goal, and one goal. Fourth-year defender Gracyn Banks had five shots and four shots on goal.
Kenah leads the team in points (nine) and goals (four). Ward ranks second with seven points and three goals. Banks ranks second in the conference with three defensive saves.
After a tough start, the Quakers (2-8) have won two out of their last three headed into this Friday’s contest against Cornell in New York. So far this season, Penn has played seven ranked opponents, including a 4-3 loss to No. 1 Northwestern, a 2-1 loss to No. 7 Princeton, a 2-1 loss to No. 15 Harvard, and a 2-0 triumph over No. 24 Temple.
