A road trip for orthopedic surgery

When Leslye Alexander’s dog Olivia injured her leg in a fall, she brought her pet to an orthopedic specialist in Manhattan. Diagnosed with a torn cruciate ligament (the canine version of a torn ACL), Alexander, a resident of New York City, took the vet’s advice, but with one caveat: She and Olivia would travel to Philadelphia to have the surgery performed at Penn Vet.

Following a recommendation from a friend in New York about Penn Vet, Alexander and Olivia met with Katherine Meyers, a surgery lecturer at Ryan Veterinary Hospital. Olivia had a history of seizures as a puppy, and Alexander “liked that Penn Vet has multiple specialists and an anesthesiologist on staff to tailor the anesthesia to Olivia’s specific needs.”

The type of injury to Olivia’s leg required surgery to stabilize the tear, and Meyers also wanted to prevent future damage like arthritis around the injury site. In the end, the surgery went off without a hitch.
