Running with heart: How the body handles a marathon

It’s go-time for everyone training for the 122nd Boston Marathon. The preparation requires precise grooming of the body’s endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular conditioning. With proper training, running a marathon is not exactly dangerous per se, but it does have a considerable impact on the heart and arteries. And despite the abundance of products and gear aimed at harnessing and optimizing an athlete’s top physique, the best marathon prep may be good old-fashioned sleep and proper hydration.

Of course, one of the most determining factors in a runner’s performance is one that is hardest to control: mother nature.
