Women’s track and field ranked No. 1 in Mid-Atlantic Region

The coaches association recently ranked the Quakers first in the Mid-Atlantic Region out of 36 teams.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recently released their first regional rankings of the outdoor season, and the Penn women’s track and field team is ranked first out of 36 teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region with 723.91 points.

The Quakers were ranked ahead of Big Ten heavyweights Maryland and Penn State, Villanova of the Big East, Temple of the American Athletic Conference, Pittsburgh of the ACC, and Princeton of the Ivy League.

In only two weeks of action, Penn athletes have already set five new school records.

At a recent national competition in Florida, the 4x400m team of Candace Taylor, Cecil Ene, Uchechi Nwogwugwu, and Caroline O’Neil sprinted to a new school record time of 3:37.17.

At a recent competition in Florida, junior Anna Peyton Malizia set a new school record in the high jump, soaring to a height of 1.76m.

Junior Anna Peyton Malizia matched her recently broken indoor record in the high jump with a new outdoor school record, soaring to a height of 1.76m. 

Competing in Raleigh, North Carolina, senior captain Abby Hong ran the 5,000m in 16:05.26, a new program record and currently seventh in the NCAA East Region. 

In field events, thrower Maura Kimmel broke her own school record in the discus for the second time in two weeks, launching a throw of 53.83m, good for seventh in the NCAA East and third in Ivy League history. Junior Rachel Lee Wilson improved upon her school-record mark in the hammer, throwing for a distance of 57.87m. 

Penn is back in action next weekend at the Sam Howell Invitational, hosted by Princeton.
