Penn Integrates Knowledge Professors

PIK Professor Ezekiel Emanuel discussed the debate surrounding changes to the U.S. health care system. “Unlike a single-payer plan that forces people into a government system, Medicare-for-all offers lots of choices,” said Emanuel.

PIK Professor Philip Tetlock spoke about the inevitable decline of hedge-fund profits, even under the supervision of brilliant forecasters. “It’s harder for hedge funds to sustain high performance in the long term, especially when you have a lot of smart people second-guessing each other,” he said.

PIK Professor Michael Platt commented on an animal sentience study. While he found the research “fascinating and well-executed,” he pointed out that the study doesn’t necessarily confirm that animals have a human-like sense of self.

PIK Professor Aviv Nevo weighed in on analysts’ uncertainty about the current dynamics between wages and prices. Nevo attributed some of the confusion to researchers primarily pursuing information where it’s most easily found.

PIK Professor Philip Tetlock weighed in on the results of a study that found a lack of political diversity within the field of psychology. Tetlock proposed more collaboration between researchers with different political views.

PIK Professor Adrian Raine and Roy Hamilton of the Perelman School of Medicine discussed their new study which suggests, as Hamilton said, “that violent thought and action are not wholly preordained by one’s brain wiring, since they can be influenced by outside inputs.”
