Quaker quadrumvirate earns All-American honors

Four members of the track and field team were awarded All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Fourth-year Isabella Whittaker of the women’s track and field team and fourth-year Scott Toney, third-year James Rhoads, and first-year Ryan Matulonis of the men’s track and field team were awarded All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held Wednesday through Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

With a time of 50.17—a new school and Ivy League record—Whittaker placed fifth in the 400 meter. Her finish garnered First-Team All-American honors, making her only the third First-Team All-American in the history of Penn women’s track and field program. (Nia Akins and Anna Peyton Malizia earned First-Team All-American honors in 2019).

Whittaker concludes her Penn career with the school record in the 200 meter (23.18), 400 meter, the 4x100 relay (43.74, alongside third-year Caia Gelli, second-year Moforehan Abinusawa, and second-year Christiana Nwachuku), the 4x400m relay (3:29.29, alongside third-year Jocelyn Niemiec, fourth-year Aliya Garozzo, and Nwachuku), and the sprint medley relay (3:42.32, alongside Abinusawa, Nwachuku, and third-year Bronwyn Patterson).

Rhoads earned First-Team All-American honors in the pole vault. He placed sixth with a mark of 5.52 meters (18 feet 1.25 inches). He holds the school record in the event with a mark of 5.62 meters (18 feet, 5.25 inches).

Toney garnered Second-Team All-American honors in the pole vault with a mark of 5.37 meters (17 feet, 7.25 inches). He finished 13th.  

Matulonis took home Second-Team All-American honors in the 400-meter hurdles. He placed 10th in the semifinals with a time of 50.12.

Fourth-year Olivia Morganti and the women’s 4x100 relay team of Abinusawa, Whittaker, Gelli, and Nwachuku were All-American honorable mentions. Morganti finished 22nd in the semifinals of the steeplechase with a time of 10:19.94. She holds the school record in the event with a time of 9:57.94.

The women’s 4x100 relay team finished 17th in the semifinals with a time of 43.88.
