Quakers drop Big Red in 125th overall meeting

Penn and Cornell met for the 125th time on Friday, Nov. 2, and for the 74th time, the Quakers came away with the win.

Junior running back Karekin Brooks had 17 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown in the Red & Blue’s 20-7 victory in Ithaca, N.Y.

After Penn went three-and-out to start the game, the Big Red drove the ball down the field to the Quaker 1-yard line. Cornell had four chances to score from the 1, but the Red & Blue made a robust goal-line stand.

In the second quarter, Penn went on a 10-play, 88-yard drive that was capped off by a Jack Soslow 20-yard field goal. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Glover connected with senior wide receiver Steve Farrell on a 45-yard pass to put the Quakers in position.

Cornell countered on the subsequent possession with a 7:44 drive that covered 75 yards and resulted in a 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dalton Banks to wide receiver Lars Pedersen.

The Big Red led 7-3 at half.

On their first drive of the second half, Penn used a 10-play, 69-yard drive to take the lead. Brooks scored on a 6-yard run to give the Quakers a 10-7 advantage.

Glover found senior wide receiver Christian Pearson on a 19-yard score at the start of the fourth to increase the Red & Blue’s lead to 17-7. Glover was 4-5 on the drive for 52 yards.

Following a three-and-out forced by the Quaker defense, Penn went on a 13-play, 54-yard drive that milked 7:47 off the clock. Soslow’s 27-yard field goal made it 20-7.

Junior running back Abe Willows had 12 carries for 63 yards. Glover was 9-14 for 131 yards and a touchdown. Junior defensive back Jacob Martin had 11 tackles (8) solo. Senior linebacker Nick Miller had 8 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 and a half sacks.

The Quakers are 74-46-5 all-time against Cornell, including 22-6 dating back to 1991.

Headed into Homecoming Weekend versus Harvard, Penn is 6-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
