A ‘first’ Commencement like no other

As the pandemic moves an in-person Commencement ceremony to a future date and time, a special live online University-wide celebration on Monday, May 18, will offer up a salute to graduates, the conferral of degrees, and some surprises.

Penn’s senior leadership and trustees 12 years ago asked schools and centers to develop plans to guide their actions in event of a crisis to help continue operations, mitigate risk, and minimize disruption. Known as mission continuity, those blueprints are now helping to manage the impact of the pandemic.

The Provost’s Graduate Academic Engagement fellowship supports scholarship and civic engagement in West Philadelphia. Paul Wolff Mitchell, an anthropology doctoral student, and Michael Vazquez, a philosophy doctoral student, are the inaugural cohort.
