20 Penn students and recent graduates awarded Fulbright grants
Twenty Penn students and alumni have been awarded Fulbright grants for 2021-22, including 12 graduating seniors, six graduate students, and two recent graduates. They will conduct research, pursue graduate degrees, or teach English in Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Mexico, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, and Tajikistan.

Poet Fatemeh Shams, assistant professor in the Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations Department, has published a new book in English about politics and poetry in modern Iran. She has rebuilt the Persian language and studies program during her four years at Penn.

While building the Persian language and studies program at Penn, Fatemeh Shams draws from the millennium-old Persian literary tradition to write a new book about poetry and politics in modern Iran. She will embark on her next book project during an upcoming fellowship in Berlin.

Senior Tathagat Bhatia has been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in history and philosophy of science at the University of Cambridge in England. Bhatia, from India, is majoring in science, technology and society in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Senior Tathagat Bhatia has been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in the history and philosophy of science at the University of Cambridge in England. He is Penn’s 33rd Gates Scholar since the program started in 2001.
Senior Sakshi Sehgal has received a Harry S. Truman Scholarship, a merit-based award for graduate or professional school to prepare for a career in public service. From Atlanta, Sehgal is a philosophy major who has sub-matriculated into the philosophy master’s program. She is interested in medicine and public health, particularly the behavioral and mental health needs in lower-income populations.

Julie Nelson Davis, a history of art professor in the School of Arts & Sciences, has been named a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow in the fine arts research humanities category.
